CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:What happens when a successful businesswoman throws a dinner pa
 rty and\ninvites a 9th century pope\, a Victorian explorer\, and a Japanes
e\ncourtesan? In Caryl Churchill’s _Top Girls_\, the answer is equal\npa

mark of contemporary feminist theatre\, the play blends sharp\ncomedy with
incisive social critique to explore gender\, ambition\, and\nthe costs of
success. Through its inventive storytelling\, sharp\ndialogue and an unfo

SUMMARY:From Variable Stars to Dark Matter – The Expanding Legacy of\nHen
 rietta Leavitt
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:Henrietta Swan Leavitt’s early twentieth-century discovery of
a\nrelationship between the brightness of certain stars named \"Cepheid\n
variables” and the duration of their brightness cycles transformed\nastr
onomy. By showing that a star’s intrinsic luminosity could be\ninferred
from its variation period\, Leavitt provided the first\nreliable method fo
r measuring astronomical distances beyond our galaxy\nand established the
foundation for what became known as the cosmic\ndistance ladder. Her work
made it possible to determine the accurate\nscale of the Milky Way\, ident
ify other galaxies beyond it\, and\neventually measure the expansion of th
e Universe itself. In this\ncolloquium\, Dr. Tansu Daylan and several memb
ers of the AstroMusers\nresearch group in the Department of Physics will f
ollow the\ndevelopments stemming from her discovery\, beginning with her\n
meticulous analysis of variable stars and tracing how precise\nphotometric
measurements enabled a deeper understanding of stellar\nevolution\, inclu
ding the formation and cooling of white dwarfs. The\ndiscussion will then
move outward to the galactic scale\, where\nLeavitt’s relation revealed
the immensity of space and led to the\nrecognition of galaxies as dynamic\
, independent systems. Finally\, the\ncolloquium will examine one of the m
ost significant frontiers of\nmodern astrophysics—the detection of dark
matter—whose\ngravitational effects determine the rotation of galaxies\,
the binding\nof clusters\, and the growth of large-scale cosmic filaments
\, even\nthough it emits no light of its own. Across these themes runs a s
ingle\nunifying idea: careful observation and the disciplined use of light
as\ndata remain central to how astronomers uncover both the visible and\n
hidden structure of the Universe.\n\n THIS EVENT WILL TAKE PLACE IN SEIGL
 E HALL\, ROOM 206. DOWNLOAD A\nCAMPUS MAP HERE\n[https://admissions.washu.

CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:This talk explores hygienic theater as a tool for motivating po
